Gay Pride

Gay Pride month is underway throughout the world where society carves out a timeframe to celebrate what is known as diversity and inclusion. Those that have battled with their sexual identity attempt to unite the world to celebrate their decision to “come out of the closet.” What was once discriminated against and considered “taboo” is now honored. Having liberty to make personal decisions is a basic, God-given human right; absolutely. However, with liberty comes responsibility and accountability.

  • What is the objective measurement?
  • How does God feel about sodomy?
  • How does God feel about pride?
  • What is the solution for the world?

What is the objective measurement?

While the world has changed in its opinions of what is acceptable, God has never changed. At one time, owning slaves, beating wives, and killing Jews were acceptable in certain societies. None of these things are “good” and wholesome. Therefore, just because society agrees that something is okay does not make it so. There must be an objective measurement of what is right or wrong. The Bible is the standard and objective measurement:

  • Ps 19:7 The law of the LORD is perfect, converting the soul: the testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple.
  • Deut 17:19 And it shall be with him, and he shall read therein all the days of his life: that he may learn to fear the LORD his God, to keep all the words of this law and these statutes, to do them
  • Prov 30:5 Every word of God is pure: he is a shield unto them that put their trust in him.
  • Heb 4:12 For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

How does God feel about sodomy?

What is sodomy? There are varied definitions, but the word’s etymology can be traced back to the Bible event in Genesis 18 where God destroyed an entire metroplex named Sodom due to a certain sin? What was the sin?

  • Gen 19:4-5 – the men of the city asked about the “men which came into thee this night” and wanted to “know” them. The men wanted to have sex with men – this is the definition of sodomy.
  • In verses 8-9 it is clear that they didn’t want women
  • Vs 24 – God reigned fire and brimstone upon the entire city for the sin of homosexuality.
  • Lev 18:22 Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is abomination.
  • 1Cor 6:9 Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind, (Arsenokoites = a male homosexual = sodomite)

It is very clear that God hates it and sodomites will not go to heaven.  While may seem harsh and unkind, who are we to argue with the creator of everything?  He created men and women for a purpose.  Same sex intimate relations are a perversion of God’s created purpose.   

How does God feel about pride?

  • Prov 6:16 These six things doth the LORD hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him: A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood,  

First on this list is pride – he hates it.

Abomination = ebah = an abhorrence – disgusting

  • Prov 21:4 An high look, and a proud heart, and the plowing of the wicked, is sin.
  • Prov 16:18 Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall.
  • Mark 7:22 Thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness: All these evil things come from within, and defile the man.
  • 1John 2:16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.
  • Jas 4:6 But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble.
It is one thing to take “pride” in your work.  It is an entirely different thing to have a prideful attitude; arrogance.  It is especially abominable to proudly reject God’s word and his purpose/identity that he created you to be.  God resists us when we are prideful.  We don’t need the creator of the universe resisting us.  That’s a lose/lose.  

What is the solution for the world?

While sodomy is hated by the Lord, he also hates pride and all sin. In 1 Cor 6:9-10, God does not exclusively single out one sin:

  • 1Cor 6:9 Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived! The sexually immoral, idolaters, adulterers, passive homosexual partners, practicing homosexuals, thieves, the greedy, drunkards, the verbally abusive, and swindlers will not inherit the kingdom of God.

It is very clear the none of these will inherit the Kingdom of God

What is the solution? “All have sinned and come short of God’s glory.” (Romans 3:23) “There is none righteous, no not one.” (Romans 3:10) Where is the hope? How do we get to heaven?

  • Rom 5:8 But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.
  • Rom 5:9 Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him.
  • 1Cor 6:11 And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God.
    o Washed: have remitted – to cancel a deserved punishment
    o Sanctified: to make holy – to cleanse
    o Justified: to regard as righteous or innocent. Just-as-if-I-never-sinned.

All of this is by the Spirit of God

He can make you a new person.  He can give you a new heart.  He can cleanse you and cancel your penalty, making you innocent (as a baby).  This is the answer, friend.  Regardless of what you have done; regardless of how hard-hearted you may be.  Christ died for you.  The penalty is great, yes.  But the gift is much greater!  His grace is greater than all your sin.  Repent – change your mind today and turn to Jesus.  He will transform your life! 

Call out to Him.  Admit you are a sinner and deserve hell.  Ask him to save you; to fill you; to cleanse you; to make you new.  And He will.
